The other day I found a list I had written a couple years ago of some of my favorite good things. I still like all those things very muchly. I guess I haven’t changed much. Or they haven’t changed much because they are still good. And because good things are good, I thought I’d share them in list poemish form:
A List of Good Things
Kitten sneezes
and the way the kitten
always pauses in wonder after a sneeze
and looks at you as if to say,
“Did you see that? What was that?”
Cookie dough, and eating so much
that you end up baking barely any cookies
which is fine because you have too much
of a stomachache to eat them anyway.
Taking naps with puppies, and when they
start snoring.
That moment at the airport when a long absent face
you love appears out of a skittling of strangers,
and seeing the wrinkles on that face again
and taking full responsibility for the third
laugh line down next to the left eye.
Bear hugs, and wrap you up don’t want to let you go thought I’d never see you again hugs.
Building a tent in the living room
and listening to old radio shows and how
you have to use all the blankets in the house.
Fountain hopping at midnight, and city lights
reflecting through sprays of water.
Winter walks on snowy nights, and your breath
in a cloud and moonlight bright on the snow.
And the explosion of stars when you step
out into the darkness of the middle of nowhere…
And hearing a song for the first time
but feeling like you know it from somewhere else.
And old couples dancing together, and her head
on his shoulder and whispering about life,
“Did you see that? What was that?”
